Monitoring: no new admissions to intensive care, update of variant estimates becomes monthly

The number of new cases rises slightly Covid in Italy in the last week monitored by Regina’s cabin Ministry of Health-Higher Institute of Health. But the numbers remain very low and the impact of the virus on hospitals remains limited and stable. This is the picture that emerges regarding the progress of Sars-CoV-2.

From incidence to variants: monitoring data

In the period 6-12 June theincidence of Covid cases diagnosed and reported is equal to 3.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, for experts it is a situation “substantially stable compared to the previous week”, when the incidence was slightly lower, at 2.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants ( 30 May-5 June). The data shown in the monitoring report graph is 1,807 cases recorded in the last 7 days considered, 50 more than the week before.

As for the hospitals, as of 12 June the occupancy of beds in the medical area was 1% (641 hospitalised), stable compared to the previous week (0.9% as of 5 June). The occupancy of beds was also stable intensive care, equal to 0.3% (29 hospitalized), as in the previous week. The rates of hospitalization and mortality they are higher in the higher age groups (in the 80-89 and over 90 groups the hospitalization rates are equal to 12 and 11 per 1,000,000 inhabitants and the mortality rates are equal to 1/1,000,000 in the 70- 79, 80-89 and over 90). An element that is reported in the report is that “no new admissions to intensive care were recorded in the week of observation”.

L’transmissibility index Rt for Covid, calculated with data updated to 12 June 2024 and based on cases with hospitalization, as of 04 June it was equal to 1.07 (0.89–1.27), “substantially stable compared to the previous week”, when it was to 1 (0.81-1.21, calculated as of May 28).

L’weekly incidence of cases diagnosed and reported “is stable in almost all regions and autonomous provinces compared to the previous week”. That higher was reported in Lazio (6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) e the lowest in the Marchein which no new cases were reported in the week of observation.

The age group those recording the highest weekly incidence rate are 70-79 years old, 80-89 and over 90 years old. The trend of Covid is stable in most age groups and the median age at diagnosis is 63, stable compared to the previous week. The percentage of reinfections is around 44%, this figure is also “stable compared to the previous week”.

As regards the Covid variants circulating in Italy, “in consideration of the current epidemiological situation and the consequent reduced number of sequenced samples” present in the databases, “the prevalence estimates of the variants will be provided on a monthly rather than weekly basis”.
