As we know, in the past few weeks the fifth and final season of The Boyswhich will put an end to the violent and bloody television adventures of Billy Butcher’s team and the cruel Supes controlled by Vought.

At the end of the third season we left Butcher himself with just 18 months to live due to the use of Temp V, and with the burning disappointment of having seen young Ryan go away with his sworn enemy Homelander. In fourth season recently arrived on Prime Video, The Boys begin planning the assassination of Victoria Neuman, with Butcher losing leadership of the group to Mother’s Milk. Furthermore, in a desperate attempt to cure himself, Butcher begins to secretly take Compound V, which not only accelerates his physical decay but opens the door to unpredictable side effects. But what is the narrative arc of the beloved character played by Karl Urban in original comics? Read below to find out.

When The Boys discover a variant of Compound V that can be activated remotely, Billy Butcher devises a drastic plan unbeknownst to his companions. The new strain would in fact allow him to remotely assassinate all the Supes who have taken it, and so he plans to create a series of devices globally that, when triggered, will kill all subjects with a significant dose of the variant in their blood.

However, Compound V is also present in large quantities in common food products, a factor that would inevitably lead to the death of many unaware innocents. Knowing this and certain that his companions will never give approval to such a plan, Butcher decides to murder Mallory, Female, Breast Milk, Jonah Vogelbaum, The Legend and Frenchie.

Butcher, however, remains paralyzed from the neck down after one scuffle with Hughie with which he falls from the Empire State Building. Now destined to be arrested, Butcher begs Hughie, who is also seriously injured, to end his life. At first Hughie refuses, but to induce him to do so Butcher lies to him by claiming that he killed his parents, a ploy that drives Hughie to rage and he stabs Butcher in the chest killing him.

Hughie thus foils Butcher’s crazy plan, but takes the opportunity to threaten Vought executive James Stillwell. If the multinational continues its political machinations or attempts to inject Supes into the Armed Forces in the future, Hughie will complete the project created by Butcher.

The incarnation of Billy Butcher seen in the series, however, seems destined for a different path than his paper counterpart, even if the goals remain the same. It will therefore be interesting to see how Eric Kripke decides to continue the story of one who is undoubtedly one of the most interesting characters in the series.

In the meantime, we remind you that the first five episodes of the fourth season of The Boys are currently available for streaming exclusively on Prime Video.
