Ragusa – EstremoSud invites you to a special event: on Saturday 29 June, Yamen Manai will present his book “Bell’Abisso”, E/O editions, in Ragusa at 10.30 in Piazza San Giovanni, under the porticoes of Palazzo Ina. The work tells the story of a teenager, rebellious to injustice, accompanied by his dog “Bella”, with whom he shares an unconditional love and the experience of contempt of a society that always oppresses the weakest. Yamen Manai was born in 1980 in Tunis, lives in Paris. He has won several literary awards such as the Orange Book Prize, was nominated for the Cinq continents de la Francophone prize and obtained the prestigious Prix de la litterature arabe in 2022.
It will be a moment of reflection on the Other, who lives with us, but who we often know little about and struggle to understand. It will also be an opportunity to discuss some of the problems of our historic center. We will try to provoke you, make you angry and, perhaps, touch the deepest chords of your humanity. In our historic center there are also violent kids, who consume narcotics and drugs, make noise at night and fuel fights. They are kids we never look in the face. Very young people full of suffering in feeling alone and invisible: but, we, do not realize this, we only know how to label them as “the Tunisians”.
They are people who suffer from double absence, absent in their countries and absent here. And the fault, if we cannot see the abyss in which they live, an abyss created by a bureaucracy and an information system that marginalizes them, is certainly not just an individual “fault”. The author will dialogue with Roberto Bertolino, an expert in issues related to the Ethnopsychiatry of Migration.
This event also aims to be a contribution from Far South for better coexistence between the different communities present in the city.
