Today, Tuesday 2 July (starting at 7:30 pm), the Palio di Siena 2024 will take place. First career of the year in Piazza del Campo, it is the day of the career dedicated to the Our Lady of Provenzano: it is one of the most historic and iconic events of the popular traditions of the Bel Paese, a titanic challenge between districts that represents the emblem of parochialism and that lights up the spirits of an entire city. Ten horses, ten jockeys, ten districts ready to face each other on the tuff in the shadow of the Torre del Mangia to chase victory.

There are essentially three favourites on the eve of the match, but as always in Piazza del Campo anything can happen: Giovanni Atzeni (known as Tittia) that will mount Verano for theOca; Jonathan Bartoletti (aka Scompiglio) who will ride Ungaros for the Valdimontone; Enrico Bruschelli (renamed Bellocchio) who will defend the colours of the Pantera with Angel Face.

Also watch out for Carlo Sanna (aka Brigante) on Tabacco for the Onda, while Andrea Coghe (on Zenios for the Lupa), Sebastiano Murtas (on Ares Elce for the Leocorno), Federico Guglielmi (on Criptha for the Civetta) and Elias Mannucci (on Akida for the Nicchio) seem to be more behind. Jockeys Mattia Chiavassa (on Brivido Sardo for the Bruco) and Gabriele Puligheddu (on Ardeglina for the Giraffa) made their debut on the tuff.

Tittia chases the eleventh victory of his careerwon five palios in a row (a feat never achieved in half a century) before the sensational fall last year at Assunta when he was in command. He would get even closer to the top of the roll of honor where Aceto leads with 14 palios won, followed at thirteen by Trecciolino and Picino.

Scompiglio has won fivethe last in 2017 with Giraffa and is one of nine men to have triumphed on their debut in Piazza. Bellocchio is the son of the legendary Trecciolinobut in seven appearances he has never won. Brigante celebrated in 2017, while last August 16 he wore the colors of the Goose but fell and then the shaken Zio Frac won.

Oca stands at the top of the roll of honor with 66 victories, Chiocciola is stuck at 51, then Tartuca with 48.5 and Torre with 45. The “grandmother” is Aquila, which has not won since July 3, 1992, but will not be in the square for this occasion and therefore the most unwelcome role goes to Nicchio, which has not celebrated since August 16, 1998. The last Drappellone della Madonna di Provenzano was brought home by Selva: Tittia won on July 2, 2023 over Violenta da Clodia, it was the fifth of her five consecutive successes starting from 2019.
