A devastating accident has shaken the community of Palazzolo Acreidewhere a 10-year-old boy, Vincenzo, tragically died after falling into an artesian well during a hike.

The affair has now taken a judicial turn with the registration of nine people in the register of suspects, including a rescuer and other volunteers of the non-profit organization that organized the event.

Carmela Caligiore, 54, a volunteer and educator for the non-profit organization ‘Doniamo Sorrisi’, tried in vain to save the child by lowering herself into the well.

Her registration among the suspects is a procedural act that will allow her to participate in the autopsy of little Vincenzo, scheduled for next week. The other suspects include six educators and Giuseppe Giardina, owner of the land and president of the non-profit organization.

The charges brought by the Syracuse prosecutor’s office are of manslaughter, news that has aggravated the pain of the community and the little boy’s family.

Vincenzo’s mother shared her heartbreak on social media, describing the deep pain of losing her son with touching words and a photo of the child, underlining the void left by his untimely death.

The tragic event interrupted the local celebrations in honor of Palazzolo’s patron saint, San Paolo, replacing them with prayer vigils and moments of remembrance. Hundreds of people gathered in the Basilica of San Paolo for a vigil dedicated to the memory of Vincenzo, a sign of the profound emotion that struck the community.

This incident raises urgent questions about safety at organized activities for minors and the liability of entities running such events. While the community searches for answers and justice, the memory of Vincenzo remains alive in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
