The final of the Italian tennis internationals will be between Alexander Zverev and Nicolas Jarry. In the second semi-final the Chilean beat the American Tommy Paul in three sets, with a score of 6-3, 6-7 6-3 after over 2 hours and 44 minutes of play, and on Sunday he will challenge the German for the title. ERRANI AND PAOLINI IN DOUBLES FINAL
Jarry beats Paul 6-3 6-7 6-3 and reaches the final week of his career, first at the Foro Italico and first final in a Masters 1000. For the fourth time in history in Rome there will be a Chilean player in the semi-final. After Gonzalez in 2007, Rios in 1997 and 1998 when he won the title, it’s Nicolas Jarry’s turn. First set
In front of his grandfather who played for Chile in the Davis Cup that lost in the final against Italy, Jarry plays his most important match. In the first set, after not taking advantage of a break point in the second game, he made no mistake at 4-3. Also helped by his opponent with a blocked forehand and a double fault but the Chilean giant did well with a great response that gave him the break and then with the serve he closed the set 6-3.
Second and third sets
In the second set Paul has his first chances in response when he finds himself 15-40 in the second game but Jarry saves himself. In the fifth game he takes advantage of the first break opportunity. It seems made for the Chilean also because he had only allowed crumbs to serve. And instead at the best moment the tension is felt. In the eighth game with a double fault and three forehand errors he gives Paul the opportunity to counter break and make it 4-4. We reach the tiebreak and the American flies to 4-0. Jarry digs the response into the net for a possible 5-4. With a winning return Paul closes the tiebreak 7-3, taking the match to the third and decisive set. The first to have a chance is Jarry who has a break point in the third game but Paul bravely cancels it. The opportunity then arrives for the American but the Chilean saves himself with a deep second. The balance is broken at 3-2 when with a great response Jarry forces an error from Paul and wins the break which takes him 4-2. But the emotions aren’t over. At 5-3 the Chilean does not take advantage of 4 match points, 3 of which are consecutive. Then it’s Paul’s turn not to take advantage of two counter break points. The 13th ace arrives for Jarry who finally manages to close on the fifth match point after two hours and 44 minutes. The final in Rome will be Zverev-Jarry.
Zverev’s match
Six years after the last time, Sascha Zverev returns to the final at the Italian Internationals. The N. 5 in the world beat the revelation of the tournament, the Chilean Alejandro, in the semi-final Tabilo: 1-6, 7-6, 6-2 the final score in 2 hours and 16 minutes of play. A far from simple match for the German, who came out at a distance after a difficult start. A “diesel” version of Zverev: disastrous in the approach to the match, thanks to Tabilo’s very high performance, then concrete in the key moment. The semi-final revolves around the tiebreak of the second set, won by the German 7-4 with the decisive break in the seventh point. Then a one-way third set, with 94% of points (15 out of 16) won with the first serve. Zverev thus reaches the eleventh final of his career in a Masters 1000 (like Boris Becker) and becomes the tenth player with at least 3 finals at the Foro Italico in the Open Era. On the other hand, the defeat does not cancel Alejandro Tabilo’s extraordinary tournament. The Chilean, in his first semifinal in a Masters 1000, greets Rome with a new best ranking (no. 25 in the world) and the victory against no. 1 in the world, Novak Djokovic.
