«Conte have courage and cancel it»

TREVISO – «The mayor has courage and removes the honorary citizenship to Benito Mussolini». Stefano Pellonigroup leader of the Democratic Party in the city council, relaunches the topic of the day at Ca’ Sugana: the proposal to revoke the city honor given to the Duce in the 1920s.

«Last April 25th the mayor Mario Conte he gave a speech that we all appreciated, but now I publicly invite him to follow up on what he declared in his speech. Matteotti’s request for honorary citizenship is an important choice that garners unanimous consensus and support in the city council. Now, however, the mayor and the majority must consequent on this gesture, taking away the honorary citizenship of the instigator of the murder of the socialist deputy, as requested in our motion.”

THE APPEAL

Pelloni then turns to Riccardo Scottà, a Northern League municipal councilor who in the commission voted in favor of the revocation together with the centre-left: «I publicly thank councilor Scottà for having chosen to conscientiously evaluate the minority’s motion, without prejudicial hostility. It is incomprehensible how every proposal from the minority, even the most acceptable, can be rejected just because it is from the minority.” In the city council on Thursday 28 June, the majority and the opposition will be called to express their opinion both on the revocation of Mussolini’s citizenship and on the granting of the same honor to Giacomo Matteotti, a victim of fascism, on which, however, the right and left are in agreement.

THE VOTE

The Action councilor also intervenes on the topic Nicolò Rocco: «For personal reasons I may not be able to get to the city council in time, but I would have no doubts. I would vote in favor of honorary citizenship for Matteotti and I would vote to revoke honorary citizenship for Mussolini. It is an act of common sense, necessary to remember the assumptions of our democracy. It is inconsistent to vote for Matteotti without simultaneously expressing distance towards the person who, with his regime, was responsible for his assassination. The reasons expressed by those who oppose it are weak. I also think that cancel culture is being exaggerated, but this is not about attacking historical figures by decontextualizing their work or foolishly asking to destroy the art of a specific historical period. It is a political gesture: distancing ourselves from a dictatorship close to us in terms of time which has dramatically affected Italy.”
