(LaPresse) The secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein and the leader of the Italian Left Nicola Fratoianni at the CGIL-FLAI demonstration against exploitation at work. The protest was called after the death of the 31-year-old Indian laborer Satnam Singh who lost his life in the Pontine countryside after an agricultural machinery broke off his arm. According to initial reconstructions, the illegal employer abandoned the man’s body with his arm in a box in front of his house. A few hundred agricultural workers from the Indian and Sikh community also attended the protest in Piazza della Libertà in solidarity with the victim. “All institutions must take a step forward against this scourge, because Satnam Singh is unfortunately not an isolated case. There is a structural system of exploitation and gangmastering that must be fought. In the next few days we will present our proposal to abolish the Bossi-Fini law and rewrite it entirely, because it is a law that causes irregularities. And irregularity, as this tragedy and this murder teaches, causes precariousness, exploitation and blackmail on people like Satnam Singh” says Schlein on the sidelines of the demonstration. “It was not an accident but a real murder at work” adds Fratoianni. “Satnam Singh is yet another victim of a system that degrades the dignity of work. There is a civil war against work going on in this country. According to Lollobrigida, shouldn’t agricultural businesses be criminalized? I wouldn’t want deaths at work and people exploited at work to be criminalised.”
