Rovigo: preview of the second edition of human rights week on 5 July

ROVIGO – The second edition of the Human Rights Week is approaching, an large multidisciplinary festival in Rovigo to promote human rights through art and culture.

Friday 5 July at 6pm Cinema Theatre Duomo there will be the official presentation to the public and the press of the event, an event full of initiatives that arises from the commitment and collaboration of many associations, cooperatives and cultural entities of the territory.

After the great success of the first edition, the initiative returns with even more strength, in an international and local context in which it is necessary to reiterate the importance and protection of human rights for all.

On July 5th, the program of the entire festival will be revealed, which will involve the historic center of Rovigo from Monday 15th to Sunday 21st July, with the highlight on the weekend with the 27th edition of Voices for Freedom – A song for Amnesty.

But on July 5th a preview dedicated to the theme of penitentiaries is also planned, with the initiative “Prison in the square”. The day is part of the “Inside and Out” project financed by the Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo Foundation in collaboration with the Municipality of Rovigo, the Manto di Martino and the involvement of the Volunteer Coordination of the Rovigo Prison.

There will be the presentation of two books related to the prison theme. The first is “Half garden, half prison” with the authors Alessia La Villa and Leandro Vanni (published by Erickson), an emotional journey in which music becomes a bridge between the garden, a symbol of life, love, fertility and brightness, and prison, a dark place hidden from society. The volume traces the history of the prison institution from the post-war period to today through music, from Ornella Vanoni to Matteo Paolillo, from De Gregori to Gaber, who have explored the theme of detention and painted in their songs pictures of waiting, time, innocence and guilt.

The second is “Prison in Italy today. A merciless photograph” (Apogeo editore) with the author Livio Ferrari, which takes into account the function of the prison institution, described as “false and criminal”. This is because “it pretends to control, avoid and prevent crimes, while it produces and reproduces them, behaving as well as and worse than those who are incarcerated, whose rights it systematically violates”.

At the end of the afternoon there will be a buffet offered by the “LeAli – prison is community” project financed by the 8X1000 of the Waldensian Church and managed by “Coop. Soc. Of All Colors” and “The House of Abraham”.

In the evening at 9pm, again at the Cinema Teatro Duomo, there will be a screening of the film “The Second Life” by Vito Palmieri, with the presence of the cast. The film explores the possibility of a repair and the courage needed to carry on an irremediably scarred existence. Anna, the protagonist, is just over thirty and has already paid for the crime she committed when she was just a teenager, but the judgment lives beyond the sentence, both in her eyes and in those of the people.

These events, like all those that will take place from 15 to 21 July, are free to enter.
