«Homoparental families are a reality»

Our journey through the Italian provinces continues in Tuscany, after the first appointment in Emilia. Prato welcomes us in large numbers, with Rainbow Families, represented by Alice Troise, and Annie Mazzola, radio presenter, Coca-Cola ambassador and face of the project Words that unite. Interviewed by the director of Cosmopolitan Lavinia Farnese, we emphasize the importance of the lexicon, the first important form of integration and acceptance of others. (New) words are important, let’s use them, let’s reclaim the spaces and create new ones: this is what happens every time a new term is found to indicate something or someone that is not yet represented. It must no longer be a fortune to have a name, but the basic right to exist.

Alice Troise, representative of Famiglie Arcobaleno Toscana, talks about it, bringing her experience as a mother and who together with her partner represents one of the many homo-parental families who still struggle to have their rights recognised: «When I was little and I started my first coming out, the reaction was “Then you will never be able to have children.” And I could also believe it since I had no examples in the context of friendships and not even in books, on TV, at the cinema, families made up of two women with children were not represented. So it was difficult to imagine and be able to respond to this need. Instead I think about how the situation has completely changed today. Three same-parent families live in my street alone, my little girl has among her nursery mates another little girl who is the daughter of two mothers, and the welcome there was wonderful. The nursery educators were super prepared.” But there is still a long way to go, in a country where there is still no recognition, at birth, of both parental figures in LGBTQIA+ couples with children, and where the association defends their right to existence, even through the legitimation of the role of those who must protect them.

Annie Mazzola, Coca-Cola ambassador, reiterates the importance of words: «I have always hated labels, but at the same time I cannot avoid definitions. The former mark, mark, you can’t take them away again and create deep scars, the latter, however, are necessary because otherwise reality cannot be described and it cannot be legitimised.”

The next appointment is with Jenny De Nucci and Famiglie Arcobaleno.
