National Rugby team: Quaglieri, FIR and Region together until 2026

(REGFLASH) L’Aquila, 21 June. – The Italian Rugby Federation and the Abruzzo Region have signed a three-year collaboration agreement which will see the Abruzzo capital and some of the regional locations with a deep-rooted tourist vocation become, from 2024 to 2026, a point of reference for summer rugby activity.

On the sidelines of training open to the public this morning at the “Tommaso Fattori” Stadium, the final act of the preparatory meeting for the summer tour in the Pacific Ocean of the Italia Maschile, the Federal President Marzio Innocenti and the Regional Councilor Mario Quaglieri made official the partnership between the governing body of Italian rugby and the Abruzzo Region: until at least 2026 the men’s national team will hold its summer meetings in the shadow of the Gran Sasso, while young rugby players from all over Italy will be able to discover the Region thanks to the FIRCamp (fircamp.federugby.it) organized by the Federation with the best coaches in the technical sector.

The agreement, as already during the 2023/24 season, will also bring the national junior men’s and women’s teams to the “Fattori” field, offering the Abruzzo public a growing number of international rugby events after the sold-out event recorded on the occasion. of the men’s U19 test match last spring between Italy and England.

“Abruzzo – declared councilor Mario Quaglieri – boasts a long love story with rugby, a sport that reflects and enhances the best characteristics of our Region. We are proud to be able to host the summer training sessions of the men’s national team this summer, and in the next two, and even more enthusiastic to welcome rugby enthusiasts from all over Italy to Abruzzo so as to make our natural, food and wine and cultural riches known and appreciated. The men’s national team, fresh from a Six Nations that thrilled all Italian athletes, is a flagship for the Federation and for the entire Italian sport. We can’t wait, as the Abruzzo Region, to return to hosting CT Quesada, his Azzurri and all the other FIR representatives in the area in the years to come. After all, rugby is not just a sport, but a school of life that teaches fundamental values such as strength, determination, respect and team spirit. These values, embodied by those who practice and love rugby, make this sport unique and extraordinarily significant.”

“At Fattori, as a player – added the Federal President Marzio Innocenti – I played some of the toughest matches of my career, but on this pitch those rivalries were transformed into friendships destined to last a lifetime, like the one with Giorgio Morelli, who today joins me at the helm of the Federation after having been a great opponent with the black-green shirt and a brother with the blue one.

Abruzzo is a land of rugby and rugby players, direct people who are proud of their origins. Returning here to prepare for the summer tour, and those of the seasons to come, demonstrates the Federation’s desire to continue working in very close contact with all the territories at the same time, confirming rugby as a tool for tourism development. I thank President Marsilio, councilor Quaglieri and the entire Regional Council for this collaboration which, I am sure, will confirm the love of Abruzzo sportsmen for our Game and will make our community discover this splendid Region”.
