Cabins of small dimensions and often without windows and air conditioning. Non-functioning toilets. Daily meals for almost three thousand law enforcement personnel distributed at a snail’s pace, with people queuing (for a cold dish) until 11pm and “little attention to the variety of food administered”. These are the “serious concerns” raised by the Italian Union of Financial Workers (SILF) and the Italian Military Carabinieri Union (SimCC) regarding the working conditions of the police forces employed at the internal port of Brindisi, on board the ship Mykonos Magic (formerly Costa Magica)That hosts uniformed staff during the G7scheduled from next Thursday (June 13th) until Saturday 15th at Borgo Egnazia, a resort in Fasano, in the province of Brindisi.

USIC: «Much better hotspots for migrants»

Also intervening is theItalian Carabinieri Trade Union Union (Usic): «The Department of Public Security, which also organized the accommodation of the Carabinieri for the G7, is evidently not up to the task – we read in a note -. The soldiers are hosted on a ship in terrible conditions from a hygienic-sanitary point of view and beyond. The hotspots that host migrants are far more decent and hygienically cleaner. So much money wasted on a questionable organization that humiliates uniformed staff, who could not even use adequate toilets after 12 hours of travel. A shame”.
A situation of “obvious contradiction”, considering “the pomp and care dedicated to the G7, including high-level dinners, dream locations and structural investments for the city of Brindisi”, we read in the Silf note signed by the regional general secretary Antonio Todisco from Puglia. In which it is specified that “the law enforcement officers are treated like soldiers on the front during the Great War”, forced to sleep “with the doors open due to the heat peaks of this period of the year”.

Requested a meeting with the leaders of the police force

Given these premises, Silf Puglia has requested a meeting with the Police Commissioner of Brindisi, the Regional Command of the Guardia di Finanza of Bari and all parties involved, in order to remedy this widespread situation. «Respect for the dignity and well-being of financiers must be a priority in every activity in which staff is employed – we read at the conclusion of the Silf note -. We will not tolerate abuse or exploitation of any kind and will do everything we can to ensure that the rights of uniformed workers who are not low-wage workers are respected.”
