the project of 5 car parks and almost 2 thousand parking spaces

As part of the project “Interventions to adapt the “Southern Corridor” and strengthen the interchange node in the Ce.Dir area, of the collective and sustainable mobility system of Reggio Calabria”, the Municipality has planned the construction of a new multi-storey modal interchange car park in the CE.DIR area.

This intervention aims to decongest vehicle traffic in the city centre, offering citizens the possibility of leaving their private vehicles parked and using public transport or shared mobility systems. The infrastructure will significantly contribute to reducing congestion in the historic centre, improving accessibility to the city’s main attractions.

Improved mobility and intermodality

The multi-storey modal interchange car park in the CE.DIR area. it will be strategically positioned near the Reggio Calabria Centro junction of the R4 motorway junction. This intervention is part of a broader strategy aimed at promoting intermodality and improving the commercial speed of local public transport (LPT).

The objective is to create a collective mobility system that is a valid alternative to the use of private vehicles, thanks also to integrated pricing and ticketing systems and infomobility technologies. The infrastructure will effectively connect the Business Centre, the Central Railway Station and the Port, integrating with other ongoing sustainable mobility initiatives.

Parking details and capacity

The new multi-storey car park will be built adjacent to the new Palace of Justice, covering an area of approximately 9,200 m2 and providing a capacity of approximately 900 spaces distributed over four levels, two of which are underground. This car park will serve both the Palace of Justice and will act as an intermodal exchange hub. The intervention also includes an increase in parking capacity in the existing parking system of the CE.DIR. Management Centre, which includes:

  1. Parking at the Palace of Justice: Currently under construction, it will have a capacity of approximately 900 parking spaces distributed over 4 levels.
  2. Ce.Dir External Parking – North Side: Existing, with a total surface area of approximately 5,000 m2 and a capacity of approximately 150 parking spaces.
  3. Internal Parking Ce.Dir: Existing, with a capacity of approximately 450 parking spaces distributed over several levels.
  4. External Parking Ce.Dir – East Side: Existing, with a total surface area of approximately 9,000 m2 and a capacity of approximately 230 parking spaces.
  5. Parking under the motorway junction viaduct: Possible expansion, with a capacity of approximately 120 parking spaces, which could be connected directly to the Business Center via an extension of the existing road network of via del Gelsomino.

These interventions are designed to optimize the use of areas already owned by the municipality, without foreseeing further land consumption. The overall increase in parking capacity will vary between 250 and 300 parking spaces, depending on the final design choices. Furthermore, the areas currently used exclusively for parking could be redeveloped for other public uses, such as pedestrian areas or equipped green spaces, improving visual and acoustic well-being and overall urban quality.

Impacts and benefits for the community

The municipal administration of Reggio Calabria expects that this intervention will increase the overall parking capacity of the parking system between 250 and 300 parking spaces, optimizing the use of areas already owned by the municipality without further land consumption.

Furthermore, the area currently used exclusively for parking could be redeveloped for other public recreational uses, such as pedestrian or green areas, improving visual and acoustic well-being and overall urban quality. This project represents a significant step towards more sustainable, efficient and citizen-friendly mobility, contributing to the reduction of pollution and the promotion of a more liveable city.

“The request for funding from the Region is part of the plan for more sustainable mobility for the city – said councilor Malara, speaking to CityNow.

We intend to work both on the lower part, with a surface metro, and on the upper part, modernizing all the motorway access nodes to the city, also imagining creating car parks that will make entry to the center of Reggio easier and easier.

As regards the car park intervention, it is a 20 million euro project which is divided into 3 lots: from the Spirito Santo junction, through the construction of a multi-storey car park with a surface park equipped for the modal interchange and the third is to modify the Calopinace road axis, making it safe and creating preferential lanes for buses”.
