“With respect to the consumption of antibiotics, an annual report is produced in Trentino by the Provincial Pharmacovigilance Center of the provincial health company, based on data relating to the supply by local pharmacies under the affiliated care system. In 2022, consumption has constituted 78 percent of total territorial consumption”. This was announced by the Province of Trento on the occasion of the adoption of the provincial plan to combat antibiotic resistance valid until 2025.

“With reference to the territorial consumption of antibacterials, from 2013 to 2019 a constant decrease was observed in Italy – highlights the Plan -. In Trentino the consumption of these drugs has always been lower than the national average: in 2020 and 2021 it a significant decline was recorded, caused by lockdowns, physical distancing measures and the consequent reduction in infections, especially pediatric ones. Consequently in Trentino consumption in the general population went from around 13 daily doses per 1,000 inhabitants in 2019 less than 10 doses in 2021. In 2022, with the progressive easing of distancing measures, consumption in Trentino began to rise and the 2023 data indicate a return to pre-pandemic values with more than 13 daily doses per 1,000 inhabitants. As regards the consumption of antibiotics in hospitals, the data for Trentino are good, placing themselves in fourth position compared to the 60 percent threshold relating to the use of antibiotics that have a narrow spectrum of activity”.
