Sinner wins the derby with Sonego, Jannik ahead in Madrid

Jannik Sinner overwhelms Lorenzo Sonego in the Italian derby in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid. Sinner, seeded number 1, on his debut on the red clay of Madrid beat Sonego 6-0, 6-3 in 1h10′. The South Tyrolean, number 2 in the world, essentially gives nothing to his compatriot, forced into the role of sparring partner in the fifth direct confrontation. Sinner doesn’t let a single game slip by the wayside in the first set. In the second, Sonego erases the zero from the scoreboard but in the fourth game he suffers the break which virtually brings down the curtain.

Sinner archives his fifth victory in as many face-to-face matches. The world number 2 flies to the third round where he awaits the winner of the match between the Russian Pavel Kotov and the Australian Jordan Thompson, number 32 in the draw.

Sinner: “I tried to put aside my friendship with Sonego, I wish him only the best”

“Playing against Lori is not easy, we have a good friendship off the court, we often train together and we have played the Davis Cup together. But I tried to put all this aside,” said Sinner after his winning debut in Madrid. “I started well, I played a very solid game from behind. He was in a bit of a hurry, he made a lot of mistakes. I tried to stay calm. I wish Lori good luck, I know he’s going through a different moment in his his career. I wish him only the best.”
