The White Party and the party pre-marriage that we see more in recent years. Now the marriages of Diletta Leotta with Loris Karius, of Pippo Inzaghi with Angela Robusti and of Ciro Immobile with Jessica Melena (anniversary, in their case) seem to want to consolidate this trend as a fixed pre-ceremony appointment. This fashion has a dual origin that has its roots in the 1980s. The original goal of the dress code white is to make everyone equal.

When was he born

In 1985 Frank Wager and Jorge Suarez organized a white dress code fundraising event in Miami to support the newly formed local AIDS organization, “Health Crisis Network”. The aim was to raise awareness of the disease which had a deadly spread in that period. 1,600 guests wore white at their inaugural White Party in the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens.

The chic version, only for fashion and personal pleasure, however, was born in 1988 from the mind of François Pasquieur who wanted to celebrate the return of his family from Tahiti, where they had stayed for years, to Paris. Since their garden was too small, they decided to organize a picnic in the Bois de Boulogne and to dress in white to better facilitate the meeting. More than a thousand guests gathered for the party. Called Le Dîner en Blanc, it still exists today and in 2012 it became a franchise with events in several cities around the world, in addition to Paris. According to its founder, the concept of white is symbolic: you have to leave your social status at home.

Party for the black community

In 1998 an African-American party promoter, Will Phelps, decided to organize a White Party in the black community of Detroit calling it the “Original White Party”. The intent was to raise African-American awareness and celebrate black beauty. However, his invention probably took inspiration from the legendary P. Diddy parties held from the late 1990s to the early 2000s.

The rapper, now disgraced by allegations of molestation of his ex-girlfriend Casandra Ventura, organized them in Saint Tropez and at his East Hampton estate. Many stars took part: Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Lil’ Kim, Star Jones, Donna Karan, Leonardo DiCaprio, the Kardashians and the Hiltons, LL Cool J and even Aretha Franklin. Anyone who wasn’t dressed all in white was removed from the party.

How to dress for a perfect White Party

Comfort and elegance first and foremost. The man can opt for a white shirt and trousers, to be copied from Giorgio Armani, a champion of simplicity and refinement, and the woman for a strapless dress perhaps in organza like the one presented by Prada for spring/summer 2024. As the recent spectacular Rick Owens fashion show in Paris (S/S 2025), white can also be dramatic and gothic, so a bit of extravagance is allowed. Maybe you can opt for long pleated peplum-effect dresses and high wedge boots so as not to go unnoticed.

If women want to be more romantic, you can opt for airy and long dresses in Sangallo lace, like the one from spring/summer 2024 by Chloé, or in cut-out lace by Valentino by Pierpaolo Piccioli or Michael Kors (S/S 2024) . If you want to feel more glamorous and take advantage of the sultry heat these days, you can be a fifties diva by wearing a cocktail dress like Marylin Monroe’s on the set of “The Seven Year Itch” or be Grace Kelly chic with the bodice dress from “To Catch a Thief”. Flat shoes or high heels, depending on the location of the party.

Men, in addition to the total white tuxedo suit, can also opt for other outfits if the party is more informal. Why not try shorts, a shirt and a straw hat with a black fabric band or a simple cotton tracksuit that saves you from having to choose every single piece of white clothing. As shoes, soft moccasins or semi-sporty canvas shoes are preferable. Inspirational cinematic style? Jude Law in “The Talented Mr. Ripley”.
