The 2024 Golden Trident goes to Edoardo Tortorici

Edoardo Tortoriciprofessor of Ancient Topography at the University of Catania, was awarded the Golden Trident 2024prestigious international award forunderwater archaeology.

The awards ceremony was held as part of the event Northeast Seaan event organized by the International Academy of Underwater Sciences and Techniques chaired by Paolo Ferraro.

Mare Nordest, already in its thirteenth edition, focuses on the Mediterranean environment, an extraordinary landscape suspended between culture and history.

For the third year, the international review of underwater activities included the ceremony for the awarding of the Golden Trident Award to personalities of great standing from various countries, including Edoardo Tortorici, former teacher at Unict, awarded for his underwater archeology activities .

The prestigious award was also awarded to Jose Garcia March (scientific director and principal researcher of the Marine Biology group of the Catholic University of Valencia in Spain), a François Sarano (oceanographer, professional diver), a Marco Anzidei (biologist who coordinated numerous research projects aimed at the interdisciplinary study of the seabed and the coastal strip).

And, moreover, also to Adriano Penco (underwater photographer of great artistic depth and international fame) and to Andrea Alpini (explorer who carried out underwater expeditions on various wrecks including that of the Andrea Doria).

The professor. For years Tortorici has been involved in the research and protection of heritage of the sea and its conservation, with important projects such as the excavation of the Grado and Gela wrecks, and the reconnaissance of the seabed of the Etna coast (Acireale and Aci Trezza).

A student of Ferdinando Castagnoli, during his career Prof. Tortorici conducted studies and research on topography and on monuments of ancient Rome such as Campo Marzio, Roman Forum and Imperial Forum and has directed numerous excavations in Italy in the areas of Osteria dell’Osa, Castel di Decima, Lavinium, Ardea, Corfinium, Montalto di Castro, Aricia, Velletri, Rome-Roman Forum, Rome-Foro di Nerva.

Since 2019 he has been president of the Italian Institute of Underwater Archaeology.
