VITERBO – Workshop internazionale: The contribution of women to the forest sciences (The contribution of women to Forestry Sciences) – 2 July 2024 from 9:00-13:00 and 14:30-17:30Aula Magna Agricultural Center Via SC De Lellis snc Viterbo.

Forestry research and the profession continue to be dominated by men; however, numerous prominent female personalities emerge across the world on both a technical and scientific level. This has recently been investigated and highlighted by studies conducted on the topic of gender inclusion in the forestry sector. The importance of this topic was also discussed in the IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations) conference recently held in Stockholm (23-29 June 2024), which emphasized how gender equality is currently facing challenges and obstacles specific because for centuries men have dominated the sector and its organizations numerically, culturally and symbolically.

We believe that dedicating an international event to this theme can obtain good consensus on a local and international scale, as well as representing a good opportunity for visibility for the DIVERSO project and for the teaching of the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences – DAFNE. The theme is of undisputed interest and fits well into the Digital, Intelligent, Green and Sustainable (DIVER.SO.) excellence project developed by our Department.

The organizing team of the workshop is composed of Professors Angela Lo Monaco, Elena Di Mattia and Rachele Venanzi of DAFNE, who are part of Task 3.2 Forestry systems and woody and non-woody production, actively involved in the development of research on these topics and included in WP3 Forestry, Natural and Semi-natural Systems.

The speakers, Prof. Cate Macinnis-Ng, Dr Janine Schweier, Dr Siti Syaliza Mustapha, Dr Maria Rita Gallozzi, Dr. Natascia Maganotti, Dr. Ilaria Dalla Vecchia, are a select group of scientists who contribute most to international research in forestry sciences.

Forests are essential for maintaining life on Earth but we must also be aware that women are essential for the sustainability of forest management. The purpose of this meeting is to promote an inclusive culture for the specific “world of forests” which contains the essence of the meaning of complexity, interaction and comparison.

Considering the opinions of others is an exercise in tolerance and inclusiveness. Discussing the contribution of women, especially in a university setting where research, education and training constitute identity, is also a symbolic act of inclusiveness.

The Digital, Intelligent, Green and Sustainable Excellence Project (DIVER.SO.), https://www.unitus.it/ricerca/dipartimenti-di-cellenza/, was financed by participating in a Ministerial Call for Departments of Excellence.

In the2022DAFNE has once again demonstrated its high level of scientific research, obtaining first place in Italy in the field of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences (Area 07) among the 180 “Departments of Excellence” selected by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR). This success has guaranteed funding for the new project “Digital, Intelligent, Green and Sustainable” (acronym: D.I.Ver.So), which will be developed in the five-year period 2023-2027.

DAFNE had already won in 2018 with SAFE MED, participating in the previous call.

In the excellence project, Prof. Angela Lo Monaco coordinates Task 3.2 Forestry systems and woody and non-woody production, which includes Profs Angela Lo Monaco, Rodolfo Picchio, Elena Di Mattia, Rachele Venanzi.
