Union, sustainable and safe home-school mobility wins
Almost 2,500 families from Casalgrande, Rubiera and Scandiano involved in the Ceas Terre Reggio Emilia-Tresinaro Secchia in
“We were born to walk” project. Among the best in the region are two middle school classes Boiardo and Spallanzani
With the end of school the daily comings and goings crowded with cars, motorbikes, buses,
bicycles and pedestrians entering and exiting school buildings. A phenomenon, that of mobility
school, often problematic due to the large traffic flows it entails and the subject of policies
educational programs aimed at improving their sustainability. Even the Ceas Terre Reggio Emilia – Tresinaro Secchia yes
has been focusing on this topic for some time thanks to the sustainability information and education programme
(Infeas) of the regional network of Ceas with the educational campaign “We were born to walk”. Ben 13 i
school complexes and 114 sections – from nursery school to middle school in the 3 plain municipalities
Casalgrande, Rubiera and Scandiano – involved in this school year: a real challenge for the almost 2,500
participating families who from 8 to 20 April tried to improve their habits in the
travel to and from school, preferring sustainable means and therefore organizing with pedestrian buses
informal and car sharing or taking rollers, scooters and skateboards out of the garage.
The effort was not in vain because with an average of 35% more sustainable journeys compared to

Another great satisfaction came from the regional rankings which saw the classes excel
II B of the Boiardo middle school in Scandiano and ID of the Spallanzani middle school in Casalgrande, which were
awarded respectively first and second place regionally in the improvement category
maximum.
“As a science teacher, education for sustainability and respect for the environment is transversal to
all the activities I do in class with my kids: the protection of biodiversity, pollution, the

years even my own personal choices have been influenced by these issues: the use of
bicycle instead of car, a more plant-based and less processed diet, reduction in use
of disposable plastic, the correct disposal of waste, a reduction in consumption, have become part
of my lifestyle. This is why I didn’t hesitate to join this beautiful project, proposing it to my parents
boys and who took up the challenge with enthusiasm: I saw them arriving by bicycle to groups of friends or
meet to go back together chatting all the way home, even in the rain, almost like an adventure
