GROSSETO – Faced with such a serious accident, the grieving residents abandon all reservations. The death of the 67-year-old motorcyclist resident in Florence, yesterday 14 June, on the Castiglionese road just before the bridge over the San Rocco emissary, shocked everyone. In particular all those people who, upon returning to their homes, found each other waiting to be able to pass with their cars. People who, unfortunately, are not the first time they have found themselves queuing in front of an accident.

«We don’t know what to do anymore – says a man who got out of the car and ran near the site of the impact – I’ve lived nearby for more than 15 years now and I no longer count how many accidents have occurred on this stretch of road. This is particularly serious, we are very sorry for what happened.”

«When I learned that this time a person died, I also feared for my loved ones – says the man – because the house where I live is right along the road like the others in front, the cars whiz by at incredible speed, I have a wife and a son, and I thought something might have happened to some of them. Unfortunately, given the trend of recent years, I really feared the worst for my family too.”

The man is not the only one to fear that some serious accident could happen again on that stretch of road. It’s also in the queue a group of young people, who once got out of their cars, animatedly discusses how dangerous it is to go home. «I live a little further on, to go home I have to go to that crossroads over there – says one of the boys pointing in the direction of Castiglione della Pescaia – With the vegetation and trees along the road, practically anyone who faces the crossroads to get onto the road often does aware of not seeing anything, you only realize at the last minute if there is a car or motorbike arriving. And at the speeds that usually arrive, you have to be both careful and lucky.”

The lack of visibility is combined with non-compliance with the rules. «Here the cars travel as if they were on a racetrack – adds another resident – They see the straight and it doesn’t matter if there is a continuous line, overtaking at high speed is the order of the day. How can we feel safe?”.

«Going to work with the thought that someone from my family might be involved in the next accident in front of my house, even just for having put one foot outside the gate, is not easy – concludes the resident – I believe that this stretch of road deserves ad hoc lighting or some system like a Speed Cameras. Something, in short, that discourages drivers from pressing too hard on the accelerator and that lets them see the road clearly. Unfortunately the facts speak for themselveswe don’t need more tragedies to take action, they mustn’t happen again.”
