Orcolat is shaking Friuli again: yesterday evening at 10.19pm a strong earthquake occurred with its epicenter near Passo Rest, between the Carnic municipality of Socchieve and that of Tramonti di Sopra. At the moment there is no news of damage to people or homes.
According to the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the tremor had a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale: it was clearly felt throughout the region. It was followed by a milder tremor, of magnitude 2.3 Richter, at 10.45pm in the municipality of Tramonti di Sopra.
Historically, this is a very significant shock: the last to reach 4.0 on the Richter scale in the region were the tremors of 29 August 2015 (on the border with Slovenia) and 9 June 2012 (in Barcis). The last earthquake with a magnitude greater than 4 occurred on 12 July 2004 (mag. 5.2), with a strong shock on the border with Slovenia.
The area between Val Tagliamento and Val Tramontina often experiences seismic tremors, albeit of smaller magnitude.
