From New Zealand to the Aosta Valley and beyond, for cycling studying exposure to UV rays. This is the journey of Martin Allena unique character in the field of science and technology.

Allen, professor of THEengineering at the University of Canterbury in New Zelandwith an academic background at the universities of Bristol and Oxford, UK, is known for his research into detail development electronic devices for measuring sun exposure of people.

But Allen is not only an internationally renowned scientist, but also a passionate cyclist.

For this reason, during his journey from Oceania to our region and northern Italy – during which he visited Harp Valle d’Aosta to start a collaboration –, will participate in several GranFondo cycling races among the toughest in Europe such as Sportful Dolomiti, Gavia Mortirolo, Fausto Coppi, Etape du Tour.

During two-wheel racing, will wear the electronic dosimeters that he designed to measure UV exposure. These devices, as small as a coin, can be easily attached to the wrist – like a watch – or to your clothes during any outdoor activity.

Recently, Allen’s tools were used during an internship at Arpa Valle d’Aosta, in collaboration with Sapienza – University of Rome, comparing them with the one of the most accurate reference instruments in the world of the Aosta Valley Agency.
