He had set a fire at the entrance to the Pakistani Islamic center in Montello, in via IV Novembre, using alcohol and petrol, and then left graffiti against the place of worship and the mayor.
However, last Monday 24 June the Carabinieri identified him and reported him: a fifty-year-old worker from Bergamo, who still had both the clothes and the material used to commit the crime in his home.
The fire and the writing
A week ago the subject, who arrived on site with his face distorted by a helmet, had tried to damage the mosque, setting fire to the entrance and then fleeing. However, the flames, which were extinguished shortly after, had only ruined the doormat at the entrance and the umbrella stand outside. After the alarm, the Calcinate military arrived on site and also discovered nearby, on some public billboards, the writing in red spray paint: “Montello no more mosques, mayor dead”.
Investigations and reporting
The episode, understandably, had caused great concern in the local community and among believers. However, the investigations by the Carabinieri, who analyzed the images of the video surveillance cameras and listened to some witnesses, made it possible to collect various elements against the Italian, believed to be responsible for the intimidating act. Furthermore, both the clothes and the jerrycan used during the criminal action were found at the man’s home, thus triggering the release.
«The Carabinieri of Bergamo thank the citizens of Montello for their collaboration, reiterating their constant commitment to protecting security and combating all forms of violence and intolerance – they declared from the provincial command -. Social cohesion and mutual respect are values to be protected, to guarantee peaceful and harmonious coexistence within each community.”
