Bologna Airport: Emily Clancy, air traffic noise impact greater than expected

Our position – reports a note from the Municipality of Bologna – is that it has become an absolute priority to address the main issue: despite the mitigations and measures implemented, traffic, passengers and goods transported are continuously increasing, with growth forecasts by another 20% compared to 2023.

The constant increase in air movements and the noise effects induced on the territory and on its citizens are aspects that the municipal administration is carefully monitoring and we are working towards all the actors involved in the management of the airport, in the strong belief that the issue of the health and liveability of the city cannot be overshadowed by infrastructure development plans and that interventions to reduce the noise impact must be understood by everyone as a necessary condition for any development forecast.

Routes, directions and timetables can be optimized but to have a significant benefit new and further measures are needed and we need to think – together with the Region – of a redistribution of regional air traffic over the four airports given that today Bologna accounts for 95% of regional air traffic .

Today we wrote again to MASE to highlight how, from the available data, the comparison between what was simulated in the 2016-2030 Masterplan and what was recorded in 2023 highlights a greater noise impact of air traffic than forecast, an element that needs to be evaluated and should suggest to everyone the need to take further corrective actions with respect to the current scenario and preventive ones with reference to any further forecast of further development.
