What services will there be with the completion of the Gallarate-Malpensa railway?

The first realistic hypotheses they were presented by RFI – manager of the FS network – during a conference. RFI is not the owner of the service programming, but it is clear that the forecasts are the result of a comparison with those (Region and Trenord, above all) who have control of the service.

The starting hypothesis presented by RFI foresees that – once the new line is completed in mid-2025 – the hourly pairs from Cadorna to Malpensa are extended – one run per hour – towards Gallaratewhere they would end the line.

Another hourly train from Cadorna instead, once passing through Malpensa, would continue on the connection heading north towards Lake Maggiore: every two hours towards Arona-Domodossola and every two hours towards Laveno on the Lombardy side (this last direction would, however, require interventions to strengthen the single track line).

The next big step would arrive in a few years with the completion of the “quadrupling” of the Gallarate-Milan line, i.e. the addition of the third track Gallarate-Parabiago and the fourth track from Parabiago towards the Lombard capital: only with this upgrade the RegioExpress from Milano Centrale to Malpensa would be introduced on the new “very direct” line on FS tracks that passes through Gallarate

In between there will be the completion of the “Y” at the beginning of 2027, the double track that allows you to go from the Fs line in Legnani to the FerrovieNord line in Busto: this will allow the launch of high-speed services which – passing through Milan – reach Malpensawith “spot” frequencies, not clocked.

The current proposed model, with the first phase of extension of the Cadorna-Malpensa up to Gallarate, for now would not upset the structure of the services: these would continue to pass through Saronno and Busto Arsizio, two towns where in recent months the risk of a weakening of services. The major “reorganization” of services would come with the completion of the “quadrupling”, which would move services partly towards the FS line that passes through Gallarate. But for that we still need time.
