Safina: “Only promises about the Trapani dry dock”

The Trapani MP Dario Safina presented a new question regarding the situation of the dry dock of Trapani, addressed to the President of the Region and the Regional Councilor for Productive Activities. Safina once again denounced the serious condition of the infrastructure, calling it “unacceptable” and criticizing the lack of concrete actions by the regional government.

“After over a decade of unfulfilled expectations and promises, the Trapani dry dock continues to be in unacceptable conditions. The failure to complete the renovation works has rendered a structure of fundamental importance for our shipbuilding sector unusable,” declared the Democratic Party deputy.

The history of the basin is marked by numerous problems and delays. A tender procedure had been underway since 2019 for the provision of goods and services necessary to bring the electrical and plumbing systems up to standard, which ended unsuccessfully in July 2021 due to the exclusion of the only participant. “Since then, nothing concrete has been done to resolve the situation,” Safina underlined.

In March 2023, the regional department for Productive Activities announced the restoration of financial resources and the launch of a new tender procedure, compliant with the new Public Contracts Code. However, Safina highlights that despite available resources and official declarations, no tangible progress has been made in a year.

“The failure to operate the dry dock, an infrastructure that in the past provided work for more than one hundred people, represents a huge loss for the local economy and for employment. We cannot afford to let this situation continue any longer,” Safina continued.

Since 2019, Safina has requested the use of a portion of the former Trapani Shipyard to serve the basin, but, despite requests, nothing has been concretely achieved. “We are tired of promises and endless waits. It is time for regional institutions to act concretely to resolve this situation and return to the city of Trapani a vital infrastructure for our economy and our future”, concluded the deputy.
