CHIVASSO – Flower beds, reduced or differentiated mowing and ecological weeding. These are the practices adopted by the environment and agriculture department of the Municipality of Chivasso to promote environmental sustainability, the protection and implementation of urban biodiversity.

Separate mowing is a lawn management practice that involves reducing the frequency of cutting the grass. In this way, in fact, the plants that make up the lawn are able to complete their vegetative cycle until flowering and seed production. Differentiated mowing was practiced in specific portions of some city parks, favoring the less used areas and also the tree-lined areas, with the aim of mitigating water evaporation and guaranteeing the plants a greater water reserve. In this sense, the parks of Via De Gasperi, Via Mazzè, Bricel, Sabiunè and the green area of Viale Vigili del Fuoco are affected. The flowerbeds sown with mixtures of seeds suitable for bees and other pollinators, directly supplied by the Aspro-miele association, are present in the roundabout in via Gozzano, at the Movicentro, in via Togliatti, corso Galileo Ferraris and via Demetrio Cosola.

«The issue of the conservation of pollinating insects – said Mayor Claudio Castello – is of crucial importance for our ecosystem, especially in relation to the integrity of ecological biodiversity, sustainable development and food security. This is why the municipal administration of Chivasso is taking a concrete position with targeted actions, with the introduction of areas for urban biodiversity, and an awareness campaign which will also be conveyed by a participatory event such as the Blessed Angelo Carletti Fair”.

«”Apegrill” – explained the Councilor for the Environment Fabrizio Debernardi – is a way to play with words and to summarize the concept of what we are doing, that is, making life as “easy” as possible for bees and pollinators , increasingly threatened by the work
of man with chemical weed control activities, use of pesticides and pesticides, indiscriminate mowing of the blooms that are indispensable to them. With “Apegrill” we want to reverse the trend.”
