New tram, the Omizzolo bridge will remain closed until mid-September

PADUA – The construction sites of tram they arrive on Omizzolo bridge and, until September, there is a risk of queues in the Hospital-Portello area. Disruptions are also expected for buses. The bridge is a strategic infrastructure for the city’s traffic as it connects via Morgagni with via Gozzi. Before making the lane ways of the tram will be necessary maintenance extraordinary nature of the deck (the horizontal support structure of the bridge). We will proceed to raise the central part, redevelop the supports and reinforce the deck itself which will be relocated to its original position.

THE START

The works will start on Monday and in the first week Ap Reti Gas will proceed with the removal of the gas pipe and the related support structures positioned exposed on the side of the bridge. It will be necessary to occupy the roadway of Ponte Omizzolo with three mobile cranes and therefore from Monday on traffic it will be completely forbidden on the bridge. Next we will begin with work on the construction of the Sir3 tram line, before which the general redevelopment work of the structure is planned. The construction site will continue until mid-September, with the aim of finishing by the start of school. Next week the construction site in via Morgagni will also be moved to the opposite lane, the one on the historic center side.

Clearly the closure of the bridge will lead to a series of traffic diversions which are destined to increase the queues which have become a constant in the Station-Fair-University Institutes-Hospital complex. During the opening period of the construction sites, the traffic for those arriving from the station and going to the hospitals remains unchanged, with transit on Via Morgagni in the lane not occupied by the construction site. Anyone heading from the hospital to the station will instead have to pass through the Stanga going up via Venezia to via Goldoni and then take via della Pace to the station. Anyone traveling eastbound on via Morgagni will not be able to access the bridge and will have to turn onto via Loredan. In order not to overload via Loredan and the neighbourhood, a detour onto via Belzoni will be established for private vehicles moving towards the station, while heavy vehicles will be obliged to transit via Gattamelata, since they cannot transit on the All Saints bridge.

The necessary signage will be put in place with particular attention to the Giustiniani-Gattamelata and Falloppio-Belzoni-Morgagni intersections. During the bridge closure period, navigation of the Piovego is also prohibited in the stretch between Ponte Omizzolo and the Porte Contarine.

TRANSPORTS

Diversions for buses are also planned, with the elimination of some stops and the establishment of replacement stops. The buses traveling from the hospitals towards the station, once they reach the intersection with via Belzoni, will turn right at the traffic lights and then continue straight onto via Ognissanti where they will subsequently turn right onto via Ariosto and at the first roundabout they will have to make a U-turn and then continue on via Venezia and resume normal routes. For vehicles traveling from the station to the hospitals, the deviation remains via Valeri. The buses that go from Stanga to the station (lines U07 and U09), once they arrive at the Stanga roundabout, will have to continue along Via Venezia.

«The Omizzolo bridge is another of the very complex interventions of the Sir3 – explained the Mobility Councilor Andrea Ragona yesterday – This is why we start the construction site in the summer. During the first week we will monitor the situation, possibly ready to evaluate the establishment of a two-way traffic or an alternating one-way regulated by traffic lights on Ponte Milani”.
