“Waiting to be able to fully discuss a proposal, currently non-existent, of new regional health plan which contemplates and resolves all existing critical issues to guarantee the full right to health of Lucanians, Lucanian nephrology suffers from a widespread shortage of doctors and nurses, with a very complicated situation, above all, in the dialysis centers of Chiaromonte and Villa d’Agri and the real risk that the Rionero in Vulture center will remain uncovered given that in October the only doctor present will retire”.

The regional councilors of the Democratic Party, Piero Marrese, Roberto Cifarelli and Piero Lacorazza, they ask the Basilicata Region and, in particular, the president Vito Bardi, to adopt concrete measures to protect the rights of dialysis patients, taking into account the difficult situation in the sector.

The councilors recalled:

“There are in Basilicata 2 hospital departments, one in Potenza and the other in Matera, and 12 dialysis centres, of which 2 accredited private ones (Potenza and Policoro) and 10 public ones.

Of these, 2 are in the province of Matera (Tinchi and Matera), 1 at Crob di Rionero in Vulture, 6 are under the responsibility of the ASP and 1 of the AOR San Carlo.

The situation is difficult, above all, in the ASP’s centers of competence, with the cited cases of Chiaromonte and Villa d’Agri, where there are no doctors and the dialysis shifts are covered through agreements that the ASP has signed, both with the ‘Asm, who with San Carlo.

In Rionero, however, as mentioned, the only doctor on duty will retire in October and, since it is an important center that dialyses morning and afternoon, from Monday to Saturday, and the shifts are covered by the nephrologists of San Carlo.

San Carlo itself is in great difficulty because, of the 9 doctors it has in total, at least 3 will leave.”

Marrese, Cifarelli and Lacorazza then mentioned the conventions:

“They were supposed to be a temporary phenomenon and, instead, that wasn’t the case.

Because of this We join the Aned’s request to urgently convene the nephrology technical table, dialysis and transplants which includes doctors, patients and regional officials, to understand what vision the Region and the local health authorities have to implement all health actions, from prevention to treatment, and to find the most suitable solutions there, which involve the public and the accredited private individual, together with the general directors of all four healthcare companies”.

Finally, the PD councilors asked for clarification on the single regional competition for the hiring of 5 nephrologists:

“Since all the bureaucratic process has been completed – they ask – why aren’t we making the relevant hires?”.
