PERUGIA – On trial one year after the shocking pool party. Karim Ez Zahar, the 25-year-old originally from Norcia but resident in Perugia accused of sexual assault and group sexual assault on a 20-year-old barmaid from Fabriano, will sit before the judge on July 4th. The abuses occurred during the night between 18 and 19 July 2023 in the municipal plant of Ponte San Giovanni, a hamlet of Perugia. For the young man, currently under house arrest, the prosecutor’s office requested and obtained immediate judgment.
THE RITE
The 25-year-old chose the shortened procedure. At the hearing, the girl from Fabriano will appear as a civil party, assisted by the lawyer Ruggero Benvenuto. The indictment speaks of violence carried out “together with other subjects who are currently unidentified”. How did the agents of the Perugia Flying Squad manage to close the circle around the 25-year-old? From the DNA left on a cigarette butt smoked last November 30th at the police station, waiting to be questioned. The match with the biological traces on the girl’s body and clothing then triggered the precautionary measure. At first, the 25-year-old was taken to prison, then he was placed under house arrest. The facts: the woman from Fabriano and her friend had arrived in the afternoon by train at the station and together with a friend by car they had reached the nearby Ponte Pattoli for an evening at the village festival and to meet with a group of local young people they had met shortly before at an event and with whom the 20-year-old had remained in contact via social media. Then the friend left, leaving them with the group of boys, who at the end of the evening offered to take them back to catch the train.
THE PARTY
But first the stop at a kind of party at the municipal swimming pool. There, the nightmare of the 20-year-old, in conditions of impaired defense – says the prosecutor – due to the alcohol consumed during the evening. “I fainted, when I woke up there was a boy who was abusing me” the young woman, who knew the 25-year-old, albeit superficially, told the investigators. With her friend (she was allegedly groped) she then managed to escape and ask for help. The accused, defended by lawyers Andrea Ulivucci and Vincenzo Bochicchio, has always denied any wrongdoing.
