Prison, two more suicides among prisoners: 42 since the beginning of the year – il Fatto Nisseno

(Adnkronos) – Two more suicides in prison. Last night around 8pm a 38-year-old Neapolitan inmate hanged himself with his underwear in a single cell of the Ariano Irpino prison and in the night, shortly after 1am, another 46-year-old inmate of Romanian origin was found hanged in Biella with a rudimentary rope tied to the cell’s railings. Two deaths which bring the tragic toll of suicides behind bars to 42. Deaths “in prison, in prison and in prison”, denounces Gennarino De Fazio, general secretary of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police who points the finger at overcrowding. “It is now a non-stop massacre and if there is not an immediate reversal of trend – states the trade unionist – every record in the suicide count will tragically be shattered”. “A silent massacre takes place in the prisons. A suicide every three days since the beginning of the year – underlines the Campania Guarantor of people subjected to measures restrictive of personal freedom, Samuele Ciambriello -. The suicides are both the product of the distance from politics and of civil society from prison, and from the lack of socio-health and listening figures. In penitentiary institutions we need more of a social state and less of a security state to protect human dignity”. “There is an administration that is not capable of dealing with the problems that occur, both at staff and user level – echoes the secretary of the Osapp union, Leo Beneduci -. It is time for there to be at the head of the penitentiary police who is able to manage a police force and organize it but also to strengthen its resources and capabilities. For some time – concludes Beneduci – Osapp has been declaring a state of emergency in Italian prisons”. —[email protected] (Web Info)
