Cervinara

“When institutions become the space for insult, there is a defeat for politics. Even more so when a woman is the recipient of disrespectful, vulgar, inappropriate words. As it happened to Caterina Lengua during the last city council meeting in Cervinara.

Caterina is a woman who has always been involved in politics, she is a mayor who has demonstrated over the years that she knows how to interpret her role and function well.

As the provincial secretariat of the Irpinia Democratic Party we can only testify to you our sincere and heartfelt closeness.” This is what we read in a note released by the provincial federation of the Avellino Democratic Party.

“Behavior like these – we further read – go beyond what is permitted and beyond what is tolerable and must, therefore, be denounced forcefully and without hesitation. To silence events like this means to be in some ways complicit.

The Democratic Party, a progressive force that has always condemned all forms of violence and discrimination, cannot help but stand alongside Caterina and all those women involved in institutions and politics who, precisely because of their gender, they are often forced to suffer sexist attacks and insults. Eradicating these medieval legacies means doing democracy a good service.”

Solidarity also from the Samnite Democratic Party. Here is the note:

“We join the clear and timely words of the President of the Cervinara Municipal Council Maria Bianco.

We express our sharing and convinced support for the letter you wrote, in which you ask us to firmly condemn and fight, not to tolerate in any way, even and above all in places of maximum democratic expression, including city councils, the use of language ferocious, violent and misogynistic, in this case directed towards the mayor Caterina Lengua during the carrying out of council work.

We denounce these episodes and ask each and every one of us to oppose them. Let it be an example for a battle against silence in order to re-educate men who still think of intimidating a woman through verbal violence.

Whether she is a teacher, a housewife or a mayor is not relevant. The important thing is the daily contrast, in every place, of these ways and customs of troglodytes so that everyone acts, concretely, to really change things”. The note is signed by Rosa Razzano and Giovanni Cacciano, president and secretary of the Democratic Party Samnite.
