A woman of about 35 who wanted to jump from the Meier bridge in Alexandria was saved by an assistant chief of the penitentiary police who was passing by in a car.

The episode happened late in the afternoon today, Friday 21 June, shortly after 6pm.

The policeman, who is part of the Osapp union, was with his wife when he noticed that a woman had climbed over the parapet. «As soon as I saw her I immediately stopped the car and got out, I didn’t think twice – he says -. I approached her, grabbed her and took her to safety.”

The woman was then rescued by 118 personnel, who intervened together with the police, and was taken to hospital. «He kept repeating that he wanted to end it but she didn’t resist – continues the agent -. I promised her that I will go and see her and if we can we will give her a hand».

Commenting on what happened is the regional deputy secretary Osapp Cataldo Pino. «The union and all the penitentiary police congratulate themselves on the courageous gesture which demonstrates their colleague’s self-sacrifice and sense of duty even when off duty- he said-. We now trust that the high value of this gesture will be recognised, also by our administration.”

A similar rescue, after hours of negotiation, had already happened in 2023: then a hero carabiniere was the protagonist of the gesture.
