Bari, protest by Coldiretti Puglia: “Stop unfair competition”

After checks on wheat loaded on the “ghost” ship Alma

Stop unfair imports to protect consumers. This is the objective of the protest of the farmers of Coldiretti Puglia who organized an all-out protest in front of the port of Bari. The mobilization follows the checks by the police on the Alma ship, flying the Maltese flag, defined as a “ghost”. Traces of the vessel were lost after she left Tunisia, from which she appears to have been rejected. Immediately afterwards she touched the Greek coasts to finally arrive in the Apulian port on May 28th. According to the association, the ship was loaded with wheat of Turkish origin considered of uncertain quality. The Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, in the next few hours in Bari, announced that the ship would be subject to checks by the forces of the Masaf agri-food control control room.

In the first two months of 2024 alone, Coldiretti finally claims, “almost 35 million kilos of durum wheat were imported from Turkey, almost the same quantity recorded in the whole of 2022. But imports of durum wheat from Canada also grew by 47%. , treated with glyphosate in a manner prohibited at national level”.
