In Piedmont, in the first four months of 2024, as shown by the data from the Labor, Cohesion and Territory Service of the national Uil, 16,047,141 hours of redundancy payments were requested, an increase of 49.4% compared to the same period of 2023 ( +61.5% ordinary, +40.1% extraordinary, -86% in derogation). At a national level, 169,794,234 hours were authorized, an increase of 16.8%.
The trend in the Piedmontese provinces, in the comparison between the first quarter of 2024 and 2023, was as follows: Biella +138.4%, Verbania +91.9%, Novara +86.4%, Turin +75.6%, Alessandria +19.1%, Vercelli +12.1%, Asti -5.6%, Cuneo -60.7%. Turin, with 10,595,130 hours, is the most redundant province in Italy, followed by Rome and Taranto.
In Piedmont, the percentage change in layoffs by production sectors recorded: +59.3% industry, +22.8% construction, -32.2% trade, for a total of +49.4%.
The general secretary of Uil Piemonte, Gianni Cortese, declares: “The data on requests for redundancy payments in the first four months of the year highlight the difficulties of the productive and economic fabric of our region. Turin, in particular, once again becomes the province with the greatest use of social safety nets, both due to the many ongoing corporate crises (Lear, Te Connectivity, Del Grosso to name a few) and, above all, due to the serious situation in the Stellantis plant in Mirafiori. In the next 18 months it is easy to estimate long periods of use of social safety nets, awaiting the production of the new 500 hybrid which should begin in 2026. For the automotive sector, as well as for other production sectors, affected by profound transformations that require new processes and products, it is also necessary to implement courses for updating and retraining skills, accompanied by generational changes, to provide employment security and make the territory of our region attractive”.
