REGGIO CALABRIA – “Green Sundays”, flower displays and lights. These are just some of the initiatives envisaged by the “Primavera Reggina”, the initiative promoted by the municipal administration of Reggio Calabria and whose guidelines were approved in recent days by the municipal council. The primary objective is to encourage the cultural and social growth of the municipal area, involving trade associations, cultural and recreational associations. But also to provide a pleasant setting for important sporting events, such as the cycle tour stage of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, CorriReggio, Aspromaraton. “Primavera Reggina” is the result of synergistic work between the sectors Economic Development, Culture, Tourism, Environment and Municipal Police and Traffic.

The guidelines provide for the opening of the Aragonese Castle and the Civic Art Gallery to the public on Sunday mornings in the months of April and May. The streets of the city center will light up thanks to the installation of lights on 23 April, on the occasion of the feast of the Patron Saint, in the stretch of Corso Garibaldi, between Palazzo San Giorgio and the Church of San Giorgio. Green and beauty are the protagonists, from 31 May to 2 June, with the flower display on the theme “Peace, Beauty, Identity”. Through an expression of interest, aimed at associations, public bodies, private bodies, artists and parishes, ten floral paintings will be created (to be created in mixed media) to be placed on Corso Garibaldi, in the stretch between Piazza Italia and Piazza Duomo and in Piazza Duomo and Piazza Italia.

Partnership agreements will then be formalized with the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria for the creation of street concerts on 23 April, 1 May and 2 June. Furthermore, the involvement of the holders of the “Adopt Green” agreements and the concessionaires of the gazebos of the Lungomare Falcomatà is expected to set up the assigned flowerbeds with flowering plants. The extraordinary maintenance of the flowerbeds of Via Marina has also been established with the possible planting of flowering plants; and the strengthening of the urban hygiene service throughout the area affected by the events.

The Lungomare Falcomatà will then be closed to traffic to create “green Sundays” in the April/May period; a more intense surveillance and control activity will also be planned during the events. Among the guidelines is also that of allocating a portion of the tourist tax for the implementation of certain initiatives. Specifically, 15 thousand euros for the creation of the flower display, providing a quota for the security service and another for the assignment of a contribution of 1,000/1,600 euros to the 10 projects considered the best among those received following an expression of interest ; 5,000.00 euros for the installation of the lights.

Finally, with the “Balconies in Bloom” initiative, a survey will be activated, organized by the Municipality’s press office, through which it will be possible to participate by sending a photo of the installation created by each citizen. The most voted “flowered balcony” will receive a prize from the municipal administration.
