Catania, 26 March 2024 – “The meeting ‘Citizen Security: Comparison with the Police Forces’ held this afternoon, in the presence of many people and introduced by Luigi Maugeri, on behalf of the associations present, represented a moment of profound commitment and collaboration between the world of associations, civil society and the union representatives of the police forces of the metropolitan city of Catania” as Angelo Villari, president of the ‘Comunité in Progresso’ association, said in a note.

“During the event, we could witness the enthusiasm and determination with which civil society and the many associations that attended addressed issues related to security, placing emphasis on the need to promote a real citizenship pact that you work for the democratic control of the territory, necessary to guarantee safety in our community. Collaboration and shared proposals, to make our metropolitan city more liveable”.

“The union representatives of the police forces – Laura Santonocito for the New Carabinieri Union, Giuseppe Bernardo for the SILP, Tommaso Vendemmia for the SIAP, Leo Macaluso for the SAP, Giuseppe Scaccianoce for the SIULP – appreciating the spirit of the meeting, have provided an essential contribution to the discussion, highlighting the challenges and difficulties that the category faces on a daily basis in ensuring the safety of citizens. The issues raised have shed light on crucial issues that influence not only the perception of safety, but also the quality of life in our city” specifies the president of the Comunità in Progresso association.

“The meeting represented a precious opportunity to conduct an in-depth and concrete analysis of the security situation in Catania, helping to dispel preconceptions and clichés that often surround this topic, especially in complex historical moments like the current one.
From the event emerged the proposal to promote a day against violence in stadiums, in memory of Filippo Raciti, and the desire to translate the discussions into concrete and immediately feasible actions was very clearly underlined”.

At the end of the meeting, Angelo Villari clarifies: “Today we decide to draw up a detailed document of the works, which will be discussed in a future meeting to be requested from the Prefect and the Mayor of Catania. The meeting will have to evaluate concrete interventions, through the possibility of increasing the number of patrols in service in the area, also through the use of personnel currently assigned to other services, in order to guarantee greater safety and legality throughout the city perimeter. From the meeting, which recorded the intervention of Emiliano Abramo (Community of Sant’Egidio), Emilia Salviani (La Girandola), Eliana Rasera (MLD), Enzo Magra (Mayor of Mascalucia) and Luigi Lucifora (former anti-mafia commissioner) the need for an active commitment and collaboration of active citizens with the police emerged, a useful commitment to pursue effective solutions useful for guaranteeing safety and liveability in our community.
Only through joint action and collaboration will we be able to face and overcome security-related challenges, thus contributing to creating a safer environment that guarantees respect for the rules and freedom for all citizens of Catania”.
