“Menai Bridge”, this is the code name of the operation linked to the death of King Charles. Organized for a long time down to the smallest detail, the funeral plan of the current king of the United Kingdom seems to have been recently updated and modified. This is a fact that has alarmed the whole world, also given the latest news on the monarch’s health conditions.
Plan
An operation, that of the funeral, planned almost two years ago, shortly after the death of Queen Elizabeth and the accession of King Charles. From the preconception to the official mourning, up to the television exclusive, every single detail has already been established in 700 pages. In fact, the BBC will have the exclusive right to make the announcement, but it will only be able to break the news after all members of the Royal Family, the current prime minister and some ministers have been notified by telephone. The music for the church ceremony has already been decided. Just like his father Philip and his mother Elizabeth, King Charles has already established hymns and music that will be part of his funeral. In the Royal Family it is tradition that the sovereign personally decides on the funeral rite. The route of the coffin has also been established, which will go from Buckingham Palace to Westminster, and the number of guests, which as requested by Charles to avoid waste and set an example, will be reduced as much as possible. Before the funeral, however, there will be ten days of mourning. The body will be exhibited as was done with Elizabeth both in Edinburgh and in London. All events will already be organized and prepared to avoid errors and problems. The government department responsible for state funerals is the Cabinet Office, but has so far refused to confirm or deny rumors circulating about changes to the operation.
The choice of name
The name of the operation, Menai Bridge, takes inspiration from a suspension bridge located in Wales, just as Queen Elizabeth’s operation took inspiration from the London Bridge and Philip’s from the Forth Bridge. The death of King George VI, however, was communicated using the phrase “Hyde Park Corner”, while for that of Queen Mother Elizabeth the name chosen was Tay Bridge. The reason? The answer lies in the ancient tradition which in the past wanted to safeguard the death of the monarch, thus preventing it from ending up in the hands of the press too soon.
The succession
After the death of King Charles, his successor will inevitably be announced, who will be Prince William. The latter could decide to call himself William V or choose another of his first names (Arthur, Philip, Louis). Subsequently he will give the speech in which he will pay homage to his father and also to his grandmother Elisabetta. In addition to William, his wife will also be “forced” to change her name, abandoning the diminutive Kate to be called the more regal Catherine.
