«Active service for the Frecce Tricolori»

Yesterday was already a day at the beach. And the forecast speaks of good weather at least until May 1st. And the month of May will create problems for beachgoers for whom the agreement with the “Costa Sicura” lifeguards association runs from June 1st until mid-September regarding their presence on the towers. This year, however, it cannot be like this as the lifeguard problem arises due to a chapter of the ordinance of the Port Authority which has adopted a provision in force in the stretch of coastline that goes from Martinsicuro to Silvi, for all and seven municipalities on the Teramo coast.

THE PROVISIONS

Among the various provisions related to bathing safety in the summer period, with reference equipment and periods, a significant innovation stands out: ensuring the presence of lifeguards on the towers even in the low season and not only in the classic period which goes from 1st June to 15th September so we start earlier than the classic period, with the last two weekends of May: 18th and 19th, 25th and 26th in the time slot between 9.30 and 18.30. Furthermore, in the same ordinance, similar activities are foreseen for the last two weekends of September: 21st and 22nd and 28th and 29th. But if on the one hand the lifesaving period on the beach is extended in the low season where, weather permitting, the coasts they are always very popular. On the other hand, however, it requires the concessionaires of the service to speed up the timing on an organizational level, and also the Municipalities for the supervision of free beaches, also having to deal with the difficulties of finding staff, which now affects every tourism sector.

THE COMPLAINTS

Many complain because they are unable to find not only lifeguards but also kitchen staff and waiters. But returning to lifeguards, what is the position of the Costa Sicura association which covers the service from Giulianova to Martinsicuro and is also active in Porto Sant’Elpidio? One of the representatives of the association, Nicola Lomartire explains: «This ordinance puts us in difficulty, since it came out we have started working and it is still difficult to find kids because in those weekends in May and in those at the end of September they are at school and most of those who work with us are students. Not only that, we received a note from the prefect of Teramo who invites us to increase security more on the Giulianova beach on 18 and 19 May on the occasion of the transit of the Frecce tricolori and it is especially necessary on those days because there will be many more foreigners and many will want to take a bath. It will be difficult to cover the whole beach, but we are trying.” He then adds: «This, however, does not happen either in the Marche or in Emilia Romagna where they are experts in tourism and where attendance is much greater. You can swim there even when there is no obligation for beach resorts to have lifeguards complete with towers.”
