In the United States of America one new variant of Covid has become predominant: it is the KP.3 variantpresent as early as October 2023. It is now spreading so rapidly that it suggests a summer wave.

There are two variants of Sars-Cov2 circulating in the United States: KP.3 and LB.1, both with a clear trend of increasing infections. Confirmed infections due to the KP.3 mutation now represent a third of cases compared to 25% just two weeks ago. The LB.1 variant is counted in 17.5% of new diagnoses.

What do we know about the new Covid KP.3 variant?

Based on information gathered by CBSNews, the KP.3 Covid variant is believed to be very similar to JN.1subvariant of the Pirola variant (BA.2.86) which spread in Italy during the last Christmas period.

The KP.3 variant has characteristics that are completely similar to the KP2 variant, however the former appears to be able to evade our immune system more easily due to the different additional mutations highlighted in the Spike protein.

Is there a subvariant of the Covid KP.3 variant?

In addition to the KP.3 Covid variant, experts are currently also studying the subvariant KP.3.1.1, which could replace the previous one from which it originated. A peculiarity: it was traced above all in the course of airport screening on passengers coming from the USA and Europe.
