Volvo’s first diesel model was the 244 GL D6, equipped with a 6-cylinder of Volkswagen origin. Model that debuted on the European market in 1979. In 2001, the first home-produced diesel arrived, a five-cylinder unit made in the Skovde plant, Sweden.

In 2008 the Drive-E range was launched characterized by a 1.6 liter engine resulting from collaboration with the PSA Group. In 2012, however, the Volvo V60 D6 debuted on the market equipped with a plug-in diesel engine, the first PHEV with a diesel engine. In 2013 the car manufacturer debuted the second internally built diesel engine that is part of the Volvo Engine Architecture (VEA) family. We then arrive at 2017 when Volvo announced the stop to the development of diesel units to focus on electrification. In 2024, the last examples equipped with diesel engines left its factories.

Therefore, diesel models have characterized Volvo’s history for 45 years and in 2019 they accounted for the majority of sales in Europe. Things then changed and as we know, Volvo decided to focus everything on electrification in which it is investing heavily.

Among the latest electric models that have arrived on the market, we remember the new Volvo EX30 which we have had the opportunity to try briefly recently.
