DANIELE BOSSARI, ‘CRYSTAL. Journey to discover stones and their power’ (Mondadori, page 245, €19.00)

‘Cristallo’ by Daniele Bossari is a book that teaches, and pursues, many things. Anyone who decides to read it – and I hope there are many of them – must do so with a clear mind, just as the author wrote it, as a true treatise on human curiosity.
In the beginning there is a dramatic biographical event that pushes him on a quest towards understanding the world of crystals, and the charm of these pages is that Bossari physically sets out – as we all should do more – to try to give a answer to your questions.
Daniele Bossari is a face known to everyone as a television and radio host, from MTV to Italia 1, from Festivabar to Top of the Pops, he won Big Brother VIP in 2017 and on that occasion he also made a public marriage proposal to Filippa Lagerback with whom he has a daughter. But here the initial circumstance of a throat tumor that treacherously strikes him and which he discovers thanks to a crystal leads him to cancel his life and become a lonely man in search of answers.
He therefore undertakes, chapter after chapter, a real journey to try to understand that unsolved mystery that is the crystals and how it is possible that they were able to send him a message as clear as it is disturbing. A journey that leaves nothing out, from science, to news, to myth. He starts from the top of Mont Blanc, together with those extraordinary people who are the crystalliers, or crystal seekers, like Frank and Luciano, “boys” aged 83 and 71, who have risked and still risk their lives among those rocks. Then he arrives in Bari, among the scientists of the Italian Crystallography Association. He then moves on to the myth, from the Maya to the Celts, “and if you have had the patience to follow me this far – he writes – you now know that I proceed more by intuition than by pre-established steps, so I will do this: I will keep the topic – one of my favorites – but I will treat it following the index that my heart suggests.” So from science we move on to legend, and from myths to the level of correlation between matter and spirit. “It is a great shame, as always when science, instead of leaning into the unknown, imposes limits on itself. In this specific case – writes Bossari -, I believe it happens because we are still so attached to the binomial reality/imagination, where reality is synonymous with scientific certainty and imagination of nonsense for poets and children. But imagination is no small thing: without it, human beings would not live so differently from other animals. Imagination is the backbone of our soul, the compass which directs it towards the Higher Realms, yearning for the lost union with divinity”.
He does not set limits for himself, and neither should the reader, because beyond the teaching ‘Cristallo’ is a book on the search for understanding, which all too often now we all exhaust with an internet search, a book based on the desire to ask yourself questions and seek answers, without being afraid of appearing unprepared, therefore also a good lesson in humility. And there is a great need for this too.
