Florence, double presentation of books at the Niccolini Theatre

Matilde Gamannossi and Antonio Pagliai will be speaking. The author, an architect, was born in 1936 in the province of Treviso but has lived and worked in Florence for years. He himself, together with a group of long-time friends, is the protagonist of the holiday adventures around which the stories in the book revolve: summer excursions to the Argentario, skiing exploits on Terminillo surrounded by a very varied tourist fauna, in an ironic and disenchanted memoir from the 1950s. Between funny and paradoxical, adventurous and sometimes bordering on incredible episodes, there is space for reflections on an era that today seems very distant to us. A mythography has been created around gorgonzola, a unique case in the history of cheeses: this is demonstrated by this book which collects around fifty quotes found in narrative texts, letters and novels between the eighteenth century and the twenty-first century, from which the evocative force of this unmistakable cheese. Classical writers such as Stendhal, Manzoni and Gadda, Nobel Prize winners and numerous contemporary crime writers are equally divided between unconditional admirers and ferocious detractors. Gorgonzola does not allow half measures. The book continues with a historical overview that underlines the interaction between the morphological characteristics of Po Valley agriculture and dairy production, which resulted in the invention of gorgonzola.
