Having risen to worldwide fame thanks to Baby Reindeer, a series he created and produced, Richard Gadd has officially left Netflix to create, write and produce new projects for HBO. Lions is the working title of his new series, which follows Niall and Ruben, brothers who find each other at the former’s wedding, plunging into violence. Forty years of tension between the two are the backbone of the series, which will cover “the ups and downs of the two brothers’ relationship, from their meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, the bad, the terrible, the funny, the furious and the many challenging moments that will characterize their journey“, we read in the synopsis. “He will capture the wild energy of a changing city – and a changing world – as he tries to get to the bottom of the difficult question… What does it mean to be a man?”

A series that would seem to present itself as a study on relationships, as well as a treatise on masculinity, whether toxic or not, considering the emotional vulnerability, for better or for worse, of its author. “Ordering an HBO box set of The Sopranos, The Wire or Oz and watching it from start to finish were some of the happiest moments of my childhood.“, Gadd said in a press release. “It’s always been a dream of mine to work with HBO and be a part of its iconic roster of shows.”

Now 35, Richard Gadd is a Scottish writer, actor and comedian who has been performing since 2013. In 2016 he began to make his name with the show Monkey See Monkey Do at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, winning the Edinburgh Comedy Award. On that show Richard talked about surviving sexual violence, his mental health and the shame of feeling homosexual. In 2019 Gadd presented Baby Reindeer as a preview at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019. 5 years later Baby Reindeer became a television phenomenon, telling the strange relationship between the failed comedian Donny Dunn and his stalker.

He also starred in BBC Two drama Against the Law, BBC Three’s Clique and Sky Arts’ One Normal Night. Gadd is openly bisexual. In addition to performing on stage, Gadd has also worked extensively behind the cameras. He was a writer on Sex Education and wrote several episodes of Dave’s Ultimate Worrier and Channel 4’s The Last Leg.

He will now work for HBO.
