The State Police is investigating the discovery of human remains, which occurred on May 9th, in the countryside of Castellammare del Golfoin the Monte Inici area, in the wooded area belonging to the forest refuge called “Soprano Parks”, in a cavity over 8 meters deep. The discovery was made by personnel of the Fire Brigade of the Alpine Fluvial Speleological Nucleus (SAF) of the Provincial Command of Trapani, during an exercise. The Fire Brigade’s maneuvers to bring the remains to light continued for days, due to the morphology of the cavity and the difficulty of operating at depth.

The human remains, which reasonably belonged to a single subject, were found together with numerous bones of animal origin and other objects and personal effects, probably attributable to the corpse. The shreds of clothing recovered suggest that the subject was male. At the moment, it is not possible to establish either the time or the circumstances of his death. Since the early 1990s, the cavity has been delimited by a stone wall structure and is appropriately signposted, but in the past it appeared as one of the many natural cavities that characterize the morphological structure of the Inici mountain complex. For this reason, it could be a hiker who unexpectedly fell into the fracture, but it cannot be ruled out that it is one of the many victims of the lupara bianca, attributable to the bloody mafia war which, in the nineties, affected the territories of Alcamo and Castellammare del Golfo.

The investigations to trace the identity of the skeleton are being conducted by personnel from the local Flying Squad and the Castellammare del Golfo Police Station, coordinated by the local Public Prosecutor’s Office of Trapani which, considering medical-legal and forensic biology investigations necessary, has also delegated the Scientific Police Service of the State Police. The Castellammare Police Station will store the evidence relating to the subject’s personal effects, which will be made available to those who request to view them, for possible identification. For this purpose, please contact the Castellammare Police Station, via the switchboard.

A few months ago, human bones were found on the Marsala seafront.
