This afternoon, a large brush fire affected the stretch of SS 96 between Via Selva and the junction for Matera. The flames, fueled by the wind and dry vegetation, quickly spread towards uncultivated land, generating a thick blanket of smoke which made road traffic difficult.

The local police commissioner of Altamura, Angelo Tragni, reported that the authorities intervened promptly to manage the situation, diverting traffic to ensure the safety of motorists. On site, several fire brigade teams worked intensely for two hours, finally managing to put out the flames and restore traffic.

The fire highlighted a problem already known, but often overlooked: the management of uncultivated land full of waste.

“More and more effective controls are needed to sanction the owners of these lands,” underlined Commissioner Tragni.

Today’s event draws attention to the need for more careful maintenance of rural areas and the border areas between the city and the countryside, to prevent similar episodes from recurring in the future.
