Campi Flegrei, second day of exercise: simulated earthquake of 4.4 degrees

The presence of a significant seismic swarm at Campi Flegrei with events of magnitude 4.4, 4.2, 4.3, 3.7 and 3.9 clearly felt by the population and the increase in the speed of ground uplift was the starting scenario of the second Civil Protection exercise with which the operating system had to deal to test the Civil Protection procedures.

Yesterday, the simulation on the first day required the activation of the Municipal Operations Centers, the Relief Coordination Center at the Prefecture of Naples, the regional operations room and the Emercom Room of the Campania Civil Protection, in addition to the Vesuvius Observatory of the INGV which issued communications relating to seismic events and swarms and the convening of the National Operations Committee of the Department of Civil Protection.

It was an opportunity to verify the activities connected to the bradyseismic scenario 3, i.e. relating to a framework of widespread damage and, in particular, emergency telecommunications between the coordination centers through the regional microwave radio network, the verification of the activation of volunteering, the activation of the corporate Crisis Units of ASL Napoli 1 and ASL Napoli 2 with the activation of the health unit. Among the procedures tested on the first day: the technical checks on underground services and infrastructures, the request for the declaration of the State of National Emergency by the Campania Region and the activation of mobile rescue columns by other Italian regions.

Today is the second day of testing, with the involvement of local populations in Naples, Pozzuoli and Bacoli: exercises are planned for the evacuation procedures of residents, with transfer to safe places.
