The firefighters of the Messina Command are currently busy fighting a large fire that hit the Mazzarà Sant’Andrea landfill. The emergency required the use of a considerable number of resources, both by land and by air.

On the land front, tank trucks (APS), pump tankers (ABP) and pick-ups with firefighting modules have been deployed. On the air front, Canadair and Fire Brigade helicopters were mobilized to assist with the firefighting operations.

Currently, five teams of the Fire Brigade (VV.F) are operating at the site of the fire. Supporting them are personnel specialized in topography applied to level 2 rescue (TAS2) and a team for nuclear, bacteriological, chemical and radiological interventions (NBCR). The management of operations is entrusted to DOS personnel (Director for Firefighting Operations), assisted by various aircraft including the Falco 10, the Geronimo SH64, the Erikson and the Canadair CAN 18.

At the request of the Messina Command, the earthmoving vehicle unit (MMT) was also alerted, with vehicles coming from the Catania Command ready to intervene to remove the material. Furthermore, a further air intervention request (RIA) was made to send another Canadair.

The Carabinieri, the Local Police, the Civil Protection and the ARPAM (Regional Environmental Protection Agency) are also present at the site of the fire, all committed to supporting the containment and extinguishing operations.
