Lucca, 29 June 2024 – The ‘Silk Road’ is reborn in Ditch Street. The Lucca Fashion Weekend kicked off yesterday morning with the inauguration of the project dedicated to the suggestive street in the heart of Lucca.

The demonstrationdedicated entirely to fashion, has chosen to revive the historic Via dei Fossi, once the beating heart of the workshops of artisans specialized in silk processing.

The ceremony The opening ceremony was attended by the owners of the disused land, who generously made the premises available, and by the Lucchese Weavers’ Association, who will organize workshops and demonstrations.

The artist Francesco Zavattari he curated an installation with silk threads and plays of light, transforming the street into an interactive path where matter and light merge.

“With my creation – says Zavattari – I wanted to recall that moment in which the silkworm begins to spin its cocoon. So I recreate the concept of ‘going up to the forest’ with foliage that refers to the leaves of the mulberry tree. The first it is a raw spinning, which, coming out, becomes noble material. This is the concept: as happened in the past, the raw material created by the silkworm was transformed into pure silk and processed along these lines”.

The initiative not only does it celebrate an important historical period of Lucca’s trade, but it also represents a bridge between tradition and innovation, which could perhaps make the historic street shine again.

Francesco Zavattari, an art designer originally from Lucca, was also the protagonist of the opening evening of the event, held on Thursday at the Antico Caffè delle Mura.

He performed in a live exhibition where he painted one of his works directly on site, a work which was then divided into 40 parts sold at the symbolic price of 30 euros each. The proceeds were donated to the Luna center against gender violence, underlining the social commitment of the event.

The program for the second day of today Lucca Fashion Weekend offers various activities and installations.

Starting from 10.30, Artisanal Crossroad will take place, an itinerary among historic ateliers and artisan workshops in the historic center, where it will be possible to discover independent Made in Italy fashion brands.
