“It is necessary to arrive as soon as possible at a world order no longer marked by the use of weapons, which is always and in any case a defeat for everyone”. Thus Roberto Antonelli, president of the Accademia dei Lincei, on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the 2023-2024 academic year, held today in Rome in the presence of the President of the Republic. “In this regard, the Academy will organize an international conference dedicated to War and Peace in 2025 – Antonelli recalls – a topic to be scientifically analyzed not only in its humanitarian, but economic, social, cultural and religious implications”.
The event was held in conjunction, as every year, with the assignment of the Feltrinelli Prizes, which for 2024 went to the relief activities of the Lower Romagna Red Cross Territorial Committee after the flood, to the medicine and peace activities in Africa of the non-profit association Doctors with Africa CUAMM and, finally, to the American doctor Howard Franklin Bunn, for his fundamental discoveries relating to the treatment of blood diseases, who won the International Prize for Medicine.
As the president of the Lincei underlined, in its activity the Academy cannot ignore international crises, positioning itself as an essential interlocutor in Italy and Europe not only for culture but also in the diplomatic sphere. Among other things, Antonelli recalled the great organizational and scientific commitment to preparing for the G7. In fact, with the coordination of the Lincei, the large national academies of natural and human sciences, the so-called S7+SSH7, discussed and unanimously approved a document on the control of nuclear weapons and delivered to the Italian government five studies on topics considered strategic for the future of humanity: from the protection of agricultural production to Artificial Intelligence, from health policies to social inequalities.
